We travel to Sydney, and meet the Desi Wonder Woman- and have pakoras and chaye with her because she loves them perhaps more than we do. This Masala Award’17 winner for the Best Blogger loves to Netflix and chill at home, donning her favorite jhumkis over jammies and sending heartfelt chummis our way.

She has a really cool blog which is highly entertaining, informative and interestingly, colloquial- you can almost hear her talking to you while reading her posts.  Love her because she prefers not to be on a pedestal!

2. Tamania aka Urdu Mom @urdumom

She should win right away for being in Trudeau territory but she truly deserves this spot because she enlightened us with lassan ki chutney, taught us how to make garam masala amongst and most importantly, embarrassed our “burger” wajood with her penchant for URDU!

“Like all parents, we doubt ourselves and wonder if it’s worth it, if it will make a difference, will they remember? For me that question was answered on the night of Aug 14, after a fun but tiring day. As I cleared the kitchen I heard my daughter humming in her room. I tiptoed upstairs to hear a beautiful rendition of ‘Jeway Jeway Pakistan..’ (long live Pakistan) that she was singing to herself. With tears in my eyes and warmth in my heart, I just sat on the stairs, appreciating one of the most beautiful moments in my life. My work was done, at least for that one day.” Sharing our experience of celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day in Canada three years ago on UrduMom.com (direct link in profile)

She hospitably invites you to her home, sometimes to meet Nani ami and Bibi, or mostly Hussain, Zainab and of course, Jaffer bhai. She is living in Canada but she is a true representation of the desi mom you knew as a baby. Kia apko bhi mama yaad aarhi hein?

At number 1 we have Khalida Brohi, hailing from Baluchistan, residing in New York, and author of a book called I Should have Honor  (stay tuned for the book review) where she sheds light on the honour killings that have plagued her family and community.

She’s been through so much but lives a life full of positivity and perseverance! Her unabashed authenticity reflects how she has held home close to heart: She calls herself the Pakistani Tribal Girl and boy oh oy, do we drool over her Balochi suits she flaunts all the time- even when she was hosted by Dean Nohria of Harvard Business School!
