The show that managed to salvage the Pakistani music industry, and pick it up from the shallows of obscurity, is set to return for the tenth season this August. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the show has underwent a host of changes in terms of producers and singers, with a few timeless songs set to be presented the Coke Studio way this year.
Get ready for your playlist to be flooded with Coke Studio songs, for the latest season of the show is almost here. It was widely tipped that Rohail Hyaat, the articulate music producer and mentor that made the first six seasons of the show, was set to return to mark the tenth anniversary, but it was not to be. Instead, Strings will continue in their role, who have brought to us legendary numbers like Tajdar-e-Haram, with Faakhir, Shiraz Uppal and Noori not recalled as producers. Taking their places will be former Junoon guitarist Salman Ahmed, Sajjad Ali and Meekal Hasan, among other notable producers.
The lineup of artists is also set to be reshuffled, with former Coke Studio singers being recalled, and some new faces also being introduced. Sajjad Ali’s daughter, who no one had known to be a singer, Zau Ali, is also set to appear before the mic this year, and could be the Momina Mustehsan of season 10, who is also set to return to the show for another season. Ali Zafar is set to do another Rockstar-esque number this time around, and Ali Sethi, who mesmerized everyone with Aaqa last season, will be given the responsibility to do justice to one of Mehdi Hasan’s most iconic numbers, Ranjish Hi Sahi (all the best Ali). Also being given a tribute will be the late Junaid Jamshed.
Last season was undoubtedly memorable for both the producers of the show and for millions of Pakistanis tuning in every Sunday. It all started with Afreen Afreen taking the country by storm, and Momina Mustehsan turning into an overnight sensation. Aaqa evoked the spiritual side of things, that was coupled with Tu Kuja Man Kuja, while Paar Chana De put the musical genius of Noori to the fore. Such was the popularity of the music produced last year that it generated more views on YouTube than any other season of the show could muster up.
Here is the lineup of Coke Studio 10 known to us so far..
