Behind every great fortune there is a crime – Balzac, The Godfather movie.
Yes, the Panama case verdict began with this quote from the all time favorite, The Godfather movie. Judges tried to do it it style. Today, Supreme Court announced the much awaited Panama Case verdict which was being pointlessly dragged for a year. The verdict was quite a diplomatic one as none of the parties is sure whether the verdict is in their favor or not. On one side PML-N is celebrating and on other side PTI is distributing sweets considering it their win.
So what was the case all about?
For people who still does not know about the Panama Case, Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, Sheikh Rasheed of Awami Muslim League and Siraj-ul-Haq of Jamaat-e-Islami filed a petition against Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, the current Prime Minister of Pakistan, stating that, through him, “his family has amassed huge wealth and assets which have been acquired through means which were illegal and unfair practices which were unlawful and corrupt and exercise of public authority which was misused and abused.” All the petitioners demanded the court that Prime Minister may be declared that he is not ‘sadiq'(honest) and ‘ameen’ and should be disqualified from the parliament.
It all started on 3rd April, 2016 when the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) released the information leaked by the internal database of a law firm named Mossack Fonseca based in Panama. The information consisted of the details of a large number of offshore companies owned by different leaders of the world and one of them was our Prime Minister’s son(s). Many leaders around the world resigned from their posts after the Panama Leaks. Pakistani political parties also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif but he refused stating that he’s not involved in buying those properties in any way. That’s when the petition was filed by the said petitioners asking Sharif and family to show the trail of money in buying those offshore companies.
After long hearing sessions going on for month, today Supreme Court finally gave their verdict. According to the judgement, The Prime Minister will not be disqualified and a JIT (Joint Investigation Team) will be formed to find and clarify the money trail of Sharif Family. It was also said that Prime Minister, along with his two sons, will appear in front of JIT. The JIT will report to the Supreme Court after every 2 weeks and complete the investigation within 60 days. Judges also said that the NAB was unable to perform its duties which led to the formation of JIT. The five-member bench was headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ejaz ul Ahsan.
On the other side Pakistanis couldn’t stop expressing their views in rather funny way.
What our Ganjiswag had to say about the verdict
#PanamaCase verdict begins by quoting The Godfather & Balzac. If that doesn’t make you want to read the other 530 pages, what will?
